Jets Trade Zach Wilson to Broncos
Former No. 2 Overall Pick Departs New York
Wilson Headed to Denver for Sixth-Round Pick
The New York Jets have traded quarterback Zach Wilson to the Denver Broncos, according to a source familiar with the deal. The Broncos sent a sixth-round pick to the Jets for Wilson and a seventh-round pick.
Wilson was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but struggled in his two seasons with the Jets. He completed just 55.6% of his passes for 4,018 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. He also rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns.
The Jets acquired quarterback Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers in a trade last year, with the intention of having Rodgers mentor Wilson. However, that plan was scrapped after Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in the 2023 season.
With Rodgers injured, the Jets started Wilson as their quarterback for the first four games of the 2023 season. However, Wilson struggled mightily, completing just 49% of his passes for 587 yards, two touchdowns, and five interceptions. He was benched in favor of Mike White after the Jets' 0-4 start.
The Broncos are in need of a quarterback after Russell Wilson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in 2023. Brett Rypien started the final four games of the season for the Broncos, but he is not considered a long-term solution at the position.
It is unclear what the Broncos' plans are for Wilson. He could potentially start for Denver in 2024, but he could also serve as a backup to Brett Rypien or another quarterback that the Broncos acquire.
